I had a literature class in college which required me to read The Ramayana by Valmiki. The Ramayana is a poem which tells a story about how life was in India around 550 BC and exaplains the concept of dharma. Rama, which was the hero, lived his whole life by the rules of dharma. Indians consider him heroic precisely for that reason. When Rama was a young boy, he was the perfect son. Later he was an ideal husband to his faithful wife, Sita, and a responsible ruler of Aydohya. “Be as Rama,” young Indians have been taught for 2,000 years; “Be as Sita.”
So anyway, at the beginning of the book Valkimi the poet explains to Rama that one day Sage Narada visited him and so he asks “Who is a perfect man?”, with a description following it. I absolutely loved the response and am in complete agreement with everything described.
“Who is a perfect man-possessing strength, aware of obligations, truthful in absolute way, firm in the execution of vows, compassionate, learned, attractive, self-possesed, powerful, free from anger and envy but terror striking when roused?”
